What is Vascepa used for? 

Vascepa, with the generic name icosapent ethyl, is an oral medication that is used along with maximally tolerated statin therapy to lessen the risk of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, coronary revascularization, and unstable angina among adult patients with e elevated triglyceride levels, any cardiovascular events, or diabetes mellitus and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. It is also indicated, together with a proper diet, in reducing triglyceride levels among adult patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia. 

This is available in Vascepa 1 gram and 0.5 gram capsule forms. 

How does Vascepa work? 

This omega-3 fatty acid is classified as a lipid-lowering agent. It increases beta-oxidation while inhibiting acyl -CoA:1,2-diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT). It also decreases lipogenesis in the liver and increases plasma lipoprotein lipase activity. It is also believed that this medication can inhibit platelet aggregation.
