Vagifem, generic name estradiol, is a vaginal tablet prescribed for the treatment of atrophic vaginitis in menopausal women. It helps relieve vaginal symptoms, such as vaginal dryness, irritation, soreness, itching, pain during intercourse, and painful urination.
This medication is classified as an estrogen derivative. Vagifem is partly in control of the maintenance and development of the female reproductive system and secondary sexual characteristics. It also regulates the pituitary secretion of gonadotropins, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone.
Vagifem Vaginal Tablet (estradiol) Uses and Dosage
Make sure to read the drug leaflet before using Vagifem vaginal tablets. Administer this medication exactly as instructed.
Vagifem vaginal tablets are prescribed as one tablet daily for the first two weeks and then one tablet two times a week thereafter. Insert the tablet on the same day each week. A dosing schedule will help to avoid missing a dose.
How to insert Vagifem vaginal tablets:
- Remove the single applicator from the packaging.
- Hold the applicator with one hand in a way that a finger can press the plunger.
- Select the best position for the insertion of the tablet into the vagina.
- Use the other hand to guide the applicator during insertion. Insert until half of the applicator is within the vagina or as far as it is comfortable.
- Press the plunger fully to release the tablet inside the vagina.
- Carefully remove and throw away the applicator.
