What is Tazorac?
Tazorac is a translucent, aqueous gel which is prescribed and used topically for the treatment of psoriasis and acne. It is available in two strengths: 0.05% and 0.1%, which contains 0.5 and 1 mg of tazarotene respectively.
Tazarotene is the active ingredient of this drug. This chemical compound belongs to the acetylenic class of retinoids, having a molecular structure similar to vitamin A. It is the essential element which enhances the growth of epithelial tissue.
It also consists of certain inactive ingredients, such as benzyl alcohol 1%, ascorbic acid, butylated hydroxyanisole, butylated hydroxytoluene, and more.
Tazorac Helps with Skin Conditions
Tazorac is composed of a form of tazarotene, the cognate carboxylic acid of tazarotene, which gets activated due to rapid deesterification in humans.
Tazorac helps treat a number of skin conditions including plaque psoriasis, acne vulgaris, Irregular pigmentation of the facial skin, fine wrinkles on face, and lentigo. It regulates the development of the skin cells.
The efficacy of Tazorac has been established for the treatment of mild to moderate psoriasis which is spread over 20% body surface area. It is an immune-mediated condition which results in red, swollen, and scaly patches on the skin. The disease commonly appears on scalp, knees, and elbows, and is reportedly itchy or has a burning sensation.
Tazorac gel is also prescribed for topical treatment of mild to moderate acne, which is quite common in teenagers. Acne is a skin condition caused by clogged hair follicles or pores. A person suffering from acne has symptoms like white or black heads, and red or puss-filled pimples. Face, chest, and shoulders are among the most commonly affected parts of the body.
How to Use Tazorac
Tazorac should be used as per the directions of a dermatologist or pharmacist. Go through the patient information leaflet and use this medicine for external skin only. Before using Tazorac, inform your doctor if you are suffering from eczema or any other skin diseases.
Wash and dry your hands properly before using Tazorac. For the treatment of acne, wash the area with an anti-bacterial soap and pat dry it with a clean, dry towel. If using for psoriasis, ensure that the area is completely dry before application. Press the tube and take the gel on your finger tip. Apply a thin film of the gel evenly on the entire affected area. Take more if needed. Gently rub the cream or use as per the doctor’s instructions.
Although the dose depends upon the severity of the condition and the progress shown to the treatment, it is recommended to use the gel once daily. When using the medicine in the foam form, shake the container before use. Since the foam is flammable, avoid going near an open flame or smoking when using Tazorac.
Wash your hands after applying this medicine, unless it is used to treat the skin on hands. Avoid covering or wrapping the affected area with a bandage. Do not use this gel on healthy, cut, scraped, or burned skin.
Tazorac should be used regularly for best results. Use it for the prescribed duration only and do not apply large amounts of this gel as it would not improve your symptoms. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen after a few weeks, consult your doctor right away.
