What does Nasonex do?

Nasonex, with the generic name mometasone furoate monohydrate, is a nasal spray indicated to treat nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including sneezing, stuffy/runny nose, and itching. It also treats nasal congestion caused by seasonal allergic rhinitis and serves as a prophylaxis for the same type of allergic rhinitis. It is also prescribed for nasal polyps.

This is available in Nasonex 50 mcg nasal spray.

How does Nasonex work?

This corticosteroid could decrease certain markers of early and late phase allergic response. It demonstrates its potent anti-inflammatory action through its wide range of effects on multiple cell types like mast cells, neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages. It also acts on mediators, such as histamine, leukotrienes, cytokines, and histamines. These are all involved in the process of inflammation.

How to use Nasonex

Read this Nasal spray information sheet that comes with this product first. Avoid using any nasal spray without fully understanding the drug information and all the instructions printed in the guide. If you need more medical advice regarding your health condition or have inquiries on how to use this nasal spray, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Remember to use this medication only in the nose and exactly as directed. This is usually prescribed once or twice daily. Your Nasonex dosage will depend on your medical condition and response to the therapy. To avoid missing your doses, make a dosing schedule. This medication may also not work right away. Keep using it until the doctor advises you to do so. To avoid worsening problems, do not discontinue use abruptly.

Step by step guide in using Nasonex nasal spray.

  1. Remove the cap of your nasal spray bottle.
  2. If you are using it for the first time, prime the nasal spray by pushing the shoulder down about ten times or until a fine spray appears. Be careful not to spray the medication into your eyes. (Note: If the spray is unused for more than a week, you should re-prime it by spraying it twice or until the fine mist appears.)
  3. Blow your nose to ensure that your nostrils are clear.
  4. Close one of your nostrils by pressing it with your finger. Lean slightly forward and delicately place the nasal applicator into the opposite nostril while holding the bottle upright.
  5. With your thumb supporting or holding the bottom of the spray bottle, hold the shoulder of the applicator with your middle and index fingers. Push the shoulder downwards to release the medication.
  6. Exhale through your mouth.
  7. Repeat in the other nostril.
  8. After the sprays in each nostril, wipe the applicator using tissue and put the cap back on.
