Haldol Uses

Haldol, with the generic name haloperidol, is an oral medication indicated to treat patients with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a chronic brain condition characterized by hallucinations, delusions, abnormal motor behavior, and disorganized speech/thinking. This is also used to treat outbursts of words and uncontrolled movements among patients with Tourette’s syndrome. It is also prescribed to treat hyperactive children if other medications or therapy are not working.

This is available in Haldol 10 mg, 5 mg, 2 mg, 1 mg, and 0.5 mg tablet form.

Haldol Mechanism of Action

This antipsychotic medication has a strong antagonism on the dopamine receptor within the mesolimbic and mesocortical systems of the brain. It addresses psychotic symptoms by inhibiting the effects of dopamine and increasing its turnover. Through this medication, the balance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain is restored.

Take the tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once or twice daily. You may take it with or without a meal or as directed by your physician. Drink a glass of water right after swallowing the tablet. If you need to split the tablets, ask for assistance from a pharmacist.

Precautions when using Haldol

Before you begin taking this medication, you must disclose your full medical history to your physician, especially Parkinson’s disease, severe CNS depression, bipolar disorder, difficulty urinating, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, heart problems, low blood cell count, or seizures. Some diseases or disorders may directly affect how your body will respond to this therapy. Moreover, you should talk about all prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, herbal products, and supplements you are taking because of possible drug interactions.

During this treatment, be on the lookout for allergic reactions. Do not take this prescription drug if you have a known allergy to haloperidol or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. Signs of hypersensitivity are skin rashes, hives or itching, swelling of the face, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing. If this occurs, immediately discontinue medication and seek emergency medical attention.

This antipsychotic agent may cause QT prolongation. This should be considered a medical emergency, especially if you experience slow or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, and fainting. Keep hydrated and avoid water pills and diuretics to prevent this condition. You should also be monitored for low levels of magnesium and potassium in the blood, as these may also increase the risk of QT prolongation.

Dizziness, drowsiness, and blurry vision are some of the adverse effects of this oral medication. These side effects could be triggered or aggravated by alcohol consumption. Avoid or limit drinking alcohol. You should also practice safety caution when driving, using machinery, and doing activities that require alertness and clear vision.

Pregnant & breastfeeding moms should avoid using this oral antipsychotic drug. This is because of the undesirable effects that it may cause to unborn babies and breastfed infants.
