The most common symptom of a stomach ulcer is a specific pain in the abdomen (stomach) which has a gnawing or burning sensation. It can last for a few hours or all day. The pain often occurs after eating and can also wake up a stomach ulcer patient and cause sleep problems. Taking antacids might provide temporary relief but the pain will come back as the antacids treat the symptom, not the underlying health condition. Serious stomach ulcers which remain untreated can prove fatal, so if you suspect you may have a stomach ulcer it’s important to seek professional advice from a doctor.

PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) are also often prescribed. These prescription and over-the-counter medications include omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), rabeprazole (Aciphex), esomeprazole (Nexium) and pantoprazole (Protonix). Their purpose is to block acid production and give your stomach a chance to heal.
