This medication is used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children as young as 12 months old and relieve runny nose and sneezing caused by allergies in adults and children as young as 6 months old. Singulair (Montelukast) is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, when the air passages in the lung narrows, in people not currently taking this medication for other conditions. Do not use Singulair (Montelukast) to prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction if you are already taking this medication to prevent asthma or allergy symptoms.
This medication should be stored at room temperature. Keep the medication away from heat and moisture. Packet of oral granules should not be opened until you are ready to use the medication.
Inform your doctor about the following before taking Singulair (Montelukast): if you are allergic to any drugs, especially aspirin; pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Before taking the chewable tablet, let your doctor know if you have phenylketonuria (PKU) because the chewable tablet may contain phenylalanine.
