What is Xarelto (Rivaroxaban)?
Xarelto (generic name rivaroxaban) is an oral film-coated tablet prescribed to decrease the risk of stroke or systemic embolism in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients.
Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is also prescribed to decrease the occurrence of and serve as prophylaxis for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery.
Xarelto drug class is an anticoagulant or a factor Xa inhibitor. Xarelto medication is known to have no direct action on platelet aggregation, yet can indirectly impede the formation of clots by preventing the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin.
This is a brand-name medication. It is also available in Xarelto generic form.
How to Use Xarelto (Rivaroxaban)

This medication is normally administered once daily with evening meal or twice daily depending on the purpose and the medical condition being treated. The 10 mg and 20 mg tablets should be taken with food. It is important to take this medication at the same time every day.

If a patient is unable to swallow the tablet whole, then the 10 mg, 15 mg, and 20 mg tablets may be crushed and mixed with a small amount of applesauce followed by regular food. This mixture should be consumed immediately.
It takes about 2-4 hours for this anticoagulant to take full effect and the medication stays in the body for approximately 24 hours.
