What Is Seroquel Used For?

Seroquel is an antipsychotic medication usually prescribed for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Schizophrenia:

Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder that can cause psychosis and seriously degrade one’s quality of life. The symptoms of schizophrenia include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech, strange behavior, and withdrawal from reality. There is no known cure for this condition, however, this is effective at eliminating symptoms in 6 weeks.  The typical dose begins with 25 mg taken twice a day.

Bipolar Disorder:

Seroquel helps those with bipolar disorder manage manic episodes and depressive episodes. Intense mood swings and polarized episodic behavior associated with bipolar disorder have been shown to be reduced within 12 weeks of treatment.  The typical starting dose is one 50 mg tablet on the first day, 100 mg on the second day, 200 mg on the third day, and so forth until the target dose is achieved. The target dose depends on the tolerability and efficacy of the treatment, and is usually between 400 and 600 mg a day.

Can You Use Seroquel for Sleep Disorders?

The most commonly reported side effects following the use of Seroquel

are drowsiness, sleepiness, and sedation. Some doctors will prescribe Seroquel for insomnia, especially for those who have tried a sedative medicine (such as zolpidem or trazodone) that did not work for them or cause negative side effects that were more dangerous for them.

If you are suffering from insomnia, ask your doctor about Seroquel and which other options you have.

Is Seroquel and Alcohol Safe?

Drinking alcohol while using Seroquel should generally be avoided if possible. Alcohol can exacerbate the sedative effects of Seroquel, along with some other side effects. The benefits of Seroquel can also be diminished when the body has more alcohol in its system.

Although it is not recommended, the interactions are usually mild, and alcohol consumption may be permitted at your doctor’s discretion if the risks are minimal.

This medication for sleep

Can You Use Seroquel for Anxiety?

There are some studies that are showing Seroquel to be an effective treatment of anxiety disorders, most notably for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). This drug is not approved by the food and drug administration to treat anxiety.

GAD is different from most other forms of anxiety in that anxiety is often chronically present and is not necessarily provoked by phobias or past events.

Seroquel may be used for GAD when other medications have failed.
