What is Crestor used for?

Crestor, with the generic name rosuvastatin calcium, is an oral medication indicated to reduce elevated total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and apolipoprotein B (apo B), and triglyceride levels. It also promotes the increase of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C). This is usually prescribed, together with proper diet, among patients with hypertriglyceridemia, dysbetalipoproteinemia, homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoHF), and atherosclerosis. It is also prescribed to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and arterial revascularization procedures in patients at risk of CHD or coronary heart disease.

This is available in Crestor 20 mg, 40 mg, 10 mg, and 5 mg tablet forms.

 How does Crestor work?

This hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG Co-A) reductase inhibitor has two lipid-modifying effects. First, it increases the amount of hepatic low-density lipoprotein receptors on the cell surface to improve uptake. Second, it inhibits the hepatic synthesis of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), reducing the total number of LDL particles.

How to use it?

Read the medicine information sheet that comes with this product first. Do not take this statin if you have not fully understood the drug information and precautions in the guide provided. If you have queries regarding this maintenance treatment or need further medical advice, call your doctor or pharmacist.

Take the tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once daily, with or without food or as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the drug and drink a glass of water right after. Crestor should not be sliced, crushed, or chewed. Note that antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum could lessen the efficacy of this drug. Take these types of antacids two hours after taking rosuvastatin.

Remember to take this prescribed drug regularly and exactly as directed. Make a dosing schedule to avoid missing a dose. Your Crestor dosage should not be altered as it depends on your medical condition, response to treatment, other medications you are taking, race, and age.

It is also highly necessary to comply with the recommended diet and exercise as per your doctor to achieve optimum results. You must also keep taking Crestor even if you feel better. Do not hold Crestor even for a short time or stop taking it abruptly to avoid worsening conditions.

Continually watch out for an allergic reaction while on this treatment. Do not take this oral statin if you have a known allergy to rosuvastatin or any inactive ingredient that it contains.
