What is Flovent HFA?
Flovent HFA, with the generic name fluticasone propionate, is an oral inhalation indicated to asthma among patients 4 years old and above. It is used to prevent and control symptoms, such as shortness of breath and wheezing. It helps people do normal, everyday activities.
This oral corticosteroid has a potent anti-inflammatory effect. Flovent HFA inhibits multiple cell types and mediator secretion involved in an asthmatic response. It reduces the swelling of the airway and the lungs, which allows for easier breathing. However, this type of medication does not work immediately and should not be used for sudden asthma episodes.
This is available in Flovent HFA 220 mcg (equivalent to 250 mcg), Flovent HFA 110 mcg (equivalent to 125 mcg), and Flovent HFA 44 mcg (equivalent to 50 mcg).
How to use Flovent HFA
To initiate, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this product. Do not use this inhalation unless you have fully understood the instructions and drug information in the guide provided. If you need further medical advice or have queries about using this corticosteroid, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Remember to use this drug regularly and exactly as directed. Make a dosing schedule to avoid missing your dose. If you are prescribed other oral inhalations, note that there should be at least a one-minute interval, and you should use Flovent HFA lat.
Do not alter your dosing as it depends on your medical condition, response to treatment, age, and weight. Also, do not stop taking Flovent HFA abruptly to avoid withdrawal symptoms, including nausea, fatigue, muscle pain, dizziness, and weakness.
Step by step guide on using Flovent Inhaler:
- Ensure that the canister is firmly inserted into the actuator. Check if the counter is showing through the small window in the actuator.
- Shake well for five seconds and remove the cap from the mouthpiece. Check if there are any foreign objects before using them.
- Hold it in a vertical position, mouthpiece down.
- Through your mouth, exhale as fully and deeply as possible.
- Insert the mouthpiece into your mouth with your lips sealed around it. Simultaneously push the canister all the way down as you inhale the medication slowly and deeply through your mouth.
- Take your finger off the canister and remove the actuator from your mouth.
- Hold your breath for a minimum of 10 seconds. Then, exhale slowly. If you have prescribed two puffs or actuations, wait for at least 30 seconds before taking another one.
- After use, rinse your mouth with water to avoid fungal or yeast infection.

Precautions when using Flovent HFA
Before starting to use this inhaler, make sure that you have fully disclosed your medical history to your physician, especially eye problems, osteoporosis, liver disease, and infections. Certain conditions may directly affect how your body will respond to treatment. Additionally, talk about all the prescription drugs and nonprescription drugs you are taking because of the possible drug interactions with corticosteroids.
Be watchful for an allergic reaction while using this inhaler. Do not use this oral inhalation if you have a known allergy to fluticasone or any inactive ingredients it may contain. Hold the medication and immediately alert your medical emergency line once you observe signs of hypersensitivity, such as swelling, breathing trouble, hives, severe dizziness, and skin rashes.
This type of drug could affect your immune response. You are more likely to get an infection and experience severe symptoms of infection while on this medication. To prevent this, practice good hygiene all the time and avoid contact with people who have an infection or recently received live vaccines.
Pregnant and breastfeeding moms must use this inhaler only if extremely needed. Discuss with your healthcare provider the possible effects that this drug may cause, especially to unborn babies and nursing infants.
