What is Cipro used for?
Cipro, with the generic name ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, is an oral medication indicated to treat bacterial infections. Cipro is prescribed for skin and skin structure infections, bone and joint infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections, infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever or enteric fever, uncomplicated cervical and urethral gonorrhea, chronic bacterial prostatitis, lower respiratory infections, UTI or urinary tract infections, and acute sinusitis. However, this type of medication could only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacterial and could not be used for virus infections.
This is available in Cipro 500 mg and Cipro 250 mg tablets.
How does Cipro work?
This fluoroquinolone antibacterial has a bactericidal action which is to inhibit enzymes topoisomerase II or DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are both required for the replication, transcription, repair, and recombination of bacterial DNA.
How to use Cipro

Do not take any prescription medication without fully understanding the instructions and drug information printed in the guide. Take the tablet orally. This is usually prescribed twice a day, in the morning and the evening. You may take it with or without a meal or as directed by your doctor. Swallow the oral tablet whole and drink plenty of fluids. It is not recommended to cut, chew or crush the tablet because of its bitter taste.
Remember to take this medication exactly as directed. Make a dosing schedule to make sure that you will be able to take your dose on time. Take this prescription drug at least two hours before or six hours after taking medicines or products that may bind to it, including supplements containing iron and zinc, sucralfate, quinapril, sevelamer, or any products that may contain aluminum, calcium, or magnesium. Calcium-rich products, such as milk and other dairy products, can also decrease the effect of this drug.
Do not change your dosing as it depends on your medical condition and response to treatment. Also, keep taking this oral medication based on the length of treatment advised. Do not stop taking it abruptly, for doing so may lead to a return of infection or worsening conditions.
